Why Trust Cats.com

Assisted by my two cats, Munchkin and Biscuit, I’ve been researching, reviewing, and testing cat food for the last five years. But my experience as a cat owner goes ten years beyond that.

All this to say, I’ve spent countless hours poring over cat food labels and reading customer reviews to keep myself up to date with the pet food industry. I bring all of this knowledge and experience to the table when reviewing cat food brands. Once I’ve familiarized myself with the brand, I put the products to the test with my cats’ help.

At Cats.com, our testing process is very extensive. First, we evaluate the brand as a whole, considering metrics like recall history, sourcing and manufacturing practices, and customer satisfaction rates. Then, we purchase a few products (at full retail price) to conduct in-depth analyses and real-world testing. The following review is the product of this process.

About Birdie & Louie

Birdie & Louie was launched in July of 2022 by family-owned and -operated personal care products manufacturer, Worthy Promotional Products. Also known as Worthy Promo or simply Worthy, Worthy Promotional Products was founded in 2006 by Bo Worthy. Matthew Worthy, the Vice President of Worthy, is credited with bringing the Birdie & Louie brand to life.

Worthy Promotional Products is well-known throughout the Southern United States for its household and personal care products, but the launch of Birdie & Louie was its first step into the pet food industry. The name of the brand is an homage to Matthew Worthy’s dog, Birdie, and his father’s cat, Louie.

According to Matthew Worthy, Birdie & Louie is a family business that cares deeply about pets. The company’s stated mission is to “feed the good life” by producing wholesome and nutritious food for the pets who give their loyalty and companionship so freely.

Sourcing and Manufacturing

Most of Worthy Promotional Products’ goods are manufactured and distributed from the company’s headquarters in Wetumpka, Alabama. As much as possible, Worthy products are made using raw materials sourced from the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The company also owns a warehouse in Laredo, Texas for supplemental importing and distribution.

In an interview with Progressive Grocer, Matthew Worthy describes the development of the Birdie & Louie brand as a response to pandemic-related supply chain issues and pet food shortages. By sourcing tuna directly from Ecuador instead of Asia, Worthy was able to produce and distribute wet cat food when other pet food manufacturers couldn’t.

Today, Birdie & Louie wet cat food is still made in Ecuador and most of the recipes feature locally sourced tuna. Birdie & Louie dry cat foods are manufactured in the company’s Alabama facilities, but Worthy doesn’t offer many specifics about ingredient sourcing. There’s a detailed ingredients glossary on the Birdie & Louie website, but it only describes the nutritional merits of the ingredients the brand uses—not where they come from.

Recall History

At the time of this review, Birdie & Louie has been on the market for less than three years. During that time, there have been no product recalls.

What Kind of Cat Food Does Birdie & Louie Offer?

Birdie & Louie offers nutritionally complete meals for both cats and dogs. The cat food product line includes two dry cat foods and seven wet cat food formulas. Most of Birdie & Louie’s wet cat foods are tuna-based while poultry and fish are primary ingredients in the dry food formulas.

Here’s a list of Birdie & Louie’s wet cat food flavors:

  • Tuna Tuesday
  • Seafood Sunday
  • Tuna & Papaya
  • Tuna & Pineapple
  • Tuna & Olives
  • Chicken and Beef
  • Chicken and Lamb

Birdie & Louie’s wet cat foods come in two textures: pate and flakes in broth. All of the tuna-based products have the “flakes in broth” texture while the chicken-based recipes are pate-style. All of Birdie & Louie’s wet cat foods are grain-free.

Both of Birdie & Louie’s dry cat food formulas feature animal protein as the first ingredient. There’s one grain-free recipe (Duck Meal & Herring Meal Recipe) and one that contains grains (Chicken Meal & Brown Rice Recipe). All Birdie & Louie cat foods are nutritionally complete and balanced according to AAFCO nutrient profiles for cats in all life stages.

What Did Our Test Cats Think?

Cat testing Birdie & Louie Cat Food

Kate Barrington / Cats.com

To test Birdie & Louie cat food, I ordered the Kitchen Sink Ultimate Cat Food Variety Sampler. It’s described as a “picky eater’s paradise” and includes one 3-ounce can of each wet food flavor and an 8-ounce sample of both dry foods.

I personally appreciated the convenience of a curated sampler pack and the $9.99 price tag is hard to beat. My order shipped quickly and arrived in packaging that was both minimal and recyclable. I was pleasantly surprised to find that even the dry cat food packages were recyclable and resealable.

Overall, my cats enjoyed Birdie & Louie. The shredded Tuna Tuesday was the most popular of the three recipes reviewed below, perhaps because the texture made it easiest for my cats to lick up without having to take bites.

#1 Birdie & Louie Tuna Tuesday Gourmet Cat Food Entrée

Birdie & Louie Tuna Tuesday Gourmet Cat Food Entrée

Perhaps Birdie & Louie’s most popular recipe, Tuna Tuesday features tuna as the main ingredient and solitary animal ingredient. With its limited list of ingredients, the formula appears to offer good digestibility for cats, though we’d prefer to see an animal-sourced fat like salmon oil over the sunflower oil.

Measured as dry matter, this wet cat food contains nearly 78% protein. It’s very low in fat and carbohydrates. High protein content is great to see on a cat food label, but it’s worth noting that the low fat content reduces the food’s caloric density. At just 23 calories per ounce, some cats may need larger portions of this food to meet their daily needs.

Like all of Birdie & Louie’s tuna-based wet cat foods, this product has a “flakes in broth” texture. My cats are partial to this type of food and they loved lapping up the liquid.

#2 Birdie & Louie Chicken and Beef Gourmet Cat Food Entré

Birdie & Louie Chicken & Beef Flavored Pate Wet Cat Food

This wet cat food is made in Ecuador like the previous recipe, but it’s fish-free. It’s a limited-ingredient formula that appears to be easily digestible and fairly low in carbohydrates. Measured as dry matter, this formula contains nearly 41% protein. It’s clear from the ingredients list that it’s animal-sourced protein as well—chicken muscle meat supplemented with chicken liver and beef muscle meat.

Animal plasma may provide some protein as well, but it’s more likely included to help improve the texture and palatability of the food. Guar gum is also included as a binder and thickening agent. It’s worth noting that gums can contribute to loose stools in some cats, but many cats tolerate them just fine.

Overall, this appears to be a primarily meat-based formula and it’s moderately calorie-dense at 28 calories per ounce. The only added carbohydrate is starch, the source of which is not named (it may be the same potato starch used in the previous recipe). This food has a soft pate texture and my cats seemed to like the flavor.

Ingredients

#3 Birdie & Louie Ancient Grains Chicken Meal & Brown Rice Recipe Dry Cat Food

Birdie & Louie Chicken & Brown Rice Dry Cat Food

Birdie & Louie describes its dry cat food products as “slow cooked” but doesn’t provide details on what that means, exactly. That said, the food comes in small bite-sized triangles rather than the round kibbles you usually see with extruded dry cat food products.

Chicken meal is the primary protein in this formula and it’s supplemented with whitefish meal, egg product, and herring meal. There’s also some concentrated plant protein (pea protein) but it doesn’t appear to contribute significantly to the overall protein content. Measured as dry matter, this food contains about 33% protein.

Like most dry cat foods, this recipe is high in carbohydrates. What it has going for it, however, is that most of the carbs come from nutritious whole grains. Plus, the formula is focused on animal-sourced proteins and fats which are more biologically appropriate for cats than plant-based sources. This boosts digestibility which is helped along by the inclusion of probiotic supplements.

What Do Customers Think of Birdie & Louie Cat Food?

Because Birdie & Louie is still relatively new, online reviews are limited. Birdie & Louie doesn’t have a presence on any major third-party review sites like Trustpilot but there are some customer ratings on independent retail sites like Amazon and Chewy. The brand does allow customers to leave reviews on the Birdie & Louie website, but it’s always wise to take these with a grain of salt since the brand has ultimate control over which reviews are posted.

Overall, Birdie & Louie products seem to be pretty “hit or miss.” Cat owners are generally pleased with the quality but a significant number of cats just don’t seem to like the food.

Positive Reviews

Across the board, cat owners seem to be pretty pleased with the quality of Birdie & Louie cat food. Many satisfied customers mention ingredient quality and nutritional value. Some owners of picky cats also report good results with the food. The percentage of 5-star ratings is higher with Birdie & Louie dry food than wet food, but there are fewer reviews for the dry foods in general.

“While other dry cat foods have larger pieces and must be broken down by the kitty’s small teeth, this option seems easier to chew and digest not to mention the nutritional value of the ingredients. My kittys like it and that’s a bonus.” – Paula reviewing Birdie & Louie Ancient Grains dry cat food on Chewy.com, October 19, 2024

“All 3 of my cats love this food! I was looking for an additional pate to add to their food choices, so I tried the Beef & Chicken pate, and all 3 cats took to it immediately!” – Cynthia reviewing Birdie & Louie Chicken and Beef wet cat food on Chewy.com, August 15, 2024

Negative Reviews

Most of Birdie & Louie’s negative reviews come from people whose cats refused to touch the food. Though the brand markets its products toward picky eaters, a significant number of dissatisfied customers noted in their reviews that their own picky cats didn’t like the food.

“My 5 picky cats would not touch either flavor of Birdie & Louie, and I had bought Seafood as well as Tuna (their favorites). They each sniffed and walked away even when I did NOT put out another brand as an option!” – Mike reviewing Birdie & Louie Tuna Tuesday wet cat food on Chewy.com, October 11, 2024

“Did not like the food. My Tucker went to his bowl and tried some and walked away from it. He did not eat it I was disappointed but I also have to say that he is a very picky eater.” – Helma reviewing Birdie & Louie Chicken and Beef wet cat food on Chewy.com, October 17, 2024

How Much Does Birdie & Louie Cat Food Cost?

Birdie & Louie’s pricing is on par with similar brands like Dave’s Pet Food and Made By Nacho. All Birdie & Louie wet foods cost about $0.50 per ounce when you buy a 12-pack of 3-ounce cans. There’s no significant savings for buying a variety pack but you can get a 5% discount on each order if you start a subscription on the Birdie & Louie website. The estimated daily cost to feed a 10-pound cat Birdie & Louie wet cat food is about $4.

Both of Birdie & Louie’s dry cat foods are sold only in 3.5-pound bags. The ancient grains chicken recipe is a little cheaper at about $0.29 per ounce (when you buy the largest volume) while the grain-free duck and herring recipe averages to about $0.27 per ounce. The estimated daily cost to feed a 10-pound cat Birdie & Louie dry cat food is about $0.50.

Where Is Birdie & Louie Cat Food Sold?

Though still fairly new to the pet food market, Birdie & Louie cat food appears to be pretty easy to find. You can shop the entire collection on the brand’s website but it’s also sold on both Amazon.com and Chewy.com. The benefit of buying directly from the brand is that you can start with a sampler or variety pack to see what your cat likes.

Birdie & Louie cat food is also sold in stores. You can find it at premium grocery stores like Wegmans and Whole Foods Market as well as Fareway Meat & Grocery. Unfortunately, Birdie & Louie doesn’t seem to provide a store locator to help customers find its products in stores.

Overall, Is Birdie & Louie Cat Food a Good Choice?

If you’re looking to inject some variety into your cat’s diet and you know they enjoy tuna-flavored cat food, Birdie & Louie could very well be a hit. Birdie & Louie has a decent variety of recipes to choose from (including variety packs), and the Kitchen Sink sampler makes it easy to test it on your cat without making a significant investment.

That said, there appears to be a fairly even split between cats who love Birdie & Louie and those who simply aren’t interested. The brand’s dry foods seem to be better accepted on the whole than the wet foods, however, so Birdie & Louie might be a good pick for dry food lovers.

Birdie & Louie isn’t super pricey and the food seems to offer decent quality, but you may be able to find a brand with a stronger track record at a similar price point. It’s also worth remembering that Birdie & Louie isn’t forthcoming about the sourcing of its ingredients or the details of its manufacturing processes. If you want something sourced and made entirely in the USA, you’ll need to look elsewhere.
