About Equilibrio

Founded in 2005, Equilibrio is a European pet food company manufactured in France. This brand offers a variety of cat and dog food formulas designed to meet specific needs for various life stages and different health issues such as hairball control and weight management.

Equilibrio is a brand owned by ADM along with various other food and supplement brands for both pets and people. ADM’s purpose is “to unlock the power of nature, to enrich the quality of life.”

Sourcing and Manufacturing

Equilibrio provides very little information on their website regarding the sourcing of their ingredients or their manufacture. What we do know is that Equilibrio products are made in France and that their formulas are all GMO-free.

Here’s what Equilibrio says about their products:

“EQUILIBRIO’s products are now manufactured in Europe (France) in compliance with the strictest regulations and are guaranteed GMO-free thanks to a rigorous choice of raw materials. You can be assured that your companion enjoys the safest possible pet food.”

Recall History

To our knowledge, Equilibrio has not had a product recall to date. Keep in mind, however, that this is a European brand manufactured in France, so our research was limited by what is available online.

What Kinds of Cat Food Does Equilibrio Offer?

Equilibrio offers dry food recipes for cats divided into two categories: physiologic and veterinary. In addition to recipes for different life stages, Equilibro’s physiologic line of products offers formulas for specific health concerns like hair balls, sensitive digestion, and weight loss.

In their veterinary line of products there are four options: Obesity & Diabetic, Renal, Urinary, and Intestinal. We weren’t able to confirm, but we imagine these are the recipes sold in vet’s offices while the physiologic line is available in pet stores.

What Do Customers Think of Equilibrio Cat Food?

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to find any customer reviews for Equilibrio cat food online. We came across a few Indonesian cat food blogs writing about the brand, but their assessments didn’t seem particularly objective.

Though we don’t have input from real customers to go by, we imagine that the concerns with Equilibrio cat food would be similar to lower tier US brands like Friskies and Meow Mix. While many pet owners appreciate the low price point of dry cat foods like Equilibrio, other are right to be concerned about the quality of the ingredients and the high inclusion of plant products.

#1 Equilibrio Adult Hairball Control Dry Cat Food

This dry food formula starts with a source of animal protein as the first ingredient. Unfortunately, it’s vaguely named “dehydrated poultry.” In fact, there are no named animal ingredients in this formula aside from powdered egg.

In addition to the dehydrated poultry, we also see poultry fat, animal protein hydrolysate, and fish oil. The majority of the remaining ingredients are plant-based, including fillers and plant proteins like rice, corn, wheat, and corn gluten.

The analysis for this product doesn’t list the moisture content, but we can assume it’s somewhere around 10% as a dry food. Using that 10%, we can estimate the total carbohydrate content of this formula around 30% (as fed). This is much higher than we’d like to see in cat food.

Overall, this appears to be a primarily plant-based dry food with limited animal protein and fat and high carbohydrate content.

Ingredients

Dehydrated Poultry, Rice, Maize, Peas, Poultry Fat, Wheat, Maize Gluten, Greaves, Animal Protein Hydrolystate, Beet Pulp, Vegetable Fibers, Powdered Egg, Chicory Pulp, Fish Oil, Brewer’s Yeast, Mineral Salts, Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Psyllium Husk, Yucca Extract, Mannan Oligosaccharides.

#2 Equilibrio Kitten Natural Defences Recipe Dry Cat Food

Buy On Equilibrio-petfood

Formulated specifically for kittens, this Equilibrio dry cat food is designed to support your kitten’s natural defenses, boost intestinal health, and reduce stool odor.

If you compare the list of ingredients for this recipe to the previous one, you’ll notice that they are identical save for the order of the ingredients. This recipe is higher in both protein and fat which drives the carbohydrate content down by a little bit, though it’s still estimated around 25% (as fed).

Again, we like that this formula starts off with an animal-based source of protein and contains two animal fats, we just wish they were high-quality, named sources and not vague “poultry” and “fish oil.” We also dislike the high inclusions of low-value grains like wheat and corn as well as plant proteins like corn gluten.

Overall, this appears to be a primarily plant-based dry food with limited animal protein and fat and high carbohydrate content.

#3 Equilibrio Preference With Salmon Recipe Dry Cat Food

Buy On Equilibrio-petfood

Our favorite of the three Equilibrio recipes we reviewed, this formula starts off strong with dehydrated salmon as the primary ingredient. Next comes dehydrated poultry which, though vaguely named, is still an animal-based protein. We also see animal protein hydrolysate, dehydrated beef, and powdered egg.

The third ingredient in this recipe is greaves, an ingredient that appears in the other two formulas but lower on the list. Greaves meal is a by-product produced by melting raw fat. While it is high in protein with low ash and decent digestibility, it doesn’t come from a named animal source.

Like the previous two recipes, this formula is packed with plant ingredients. From low-value grains like corn and wheat to plant proteins like corn gluten, this formula is very carb heavy. Using an estimated moisture level of 10%, we estimate the carb content around 30% (as fed).

Overall, this appears to be a primarily plant-based dry food with limited animal protein and fat and high carbohydrate content.

How Much Does Equilibrio Cat Food Cost?

Because Equilibrio has such limited availability, both in-store and online, we weren’t able to get a good idea of its pricing. Based on the ingredient quality, however, we’d say it’s probably comparable to grocery store brands like Friskies and Meow Mix.

Overall, Is Equilibrio Cat Food a Good Choice?

Though we weren’t able to find much in the way of detailed information about Equilibro as a brand or their products, what we’ve learned from the ingredients lists of several products is enough to make a determination. Quite simply, we don’t recommend Equilibrio cat food.

Equilibrio seems to be on-par with familiar grocery store brands like Friskies and Meow Mix. With only dry food formulas available, most recipes are very plant-heavy and seem to be made primarily of by-products, fillers, and plant proteins.

Equilibrio may be an affordable choice, if you can find it, but it doesn’t provide species-appropriate nutrition for cats.

Where Is Equilibrio Cat Food Sold?

Equilibrio is manufactured in France and only appears to be sold in limited countries in Europe as well as Brazil, Angola, Portugal, and the Philippines.  Where available, Equilibrio is sold in pet specialized retailers and veterinary practices. You can view their availability on an interactive map here.
