About KatKin

KatKin is a UK-based fresh cat food company that was founded in 2019 by siblings Brett and Nikki O’Farrell. Their recipes are formulated by a Board-Certified Veterinary Nutritionist using human-grade meat. The foods are gently steam-cooked and frozen fresh then sent to your door via monthly subscription.

At its founding, KatKin was Europe’s first fresh-cooked cat food company. Their proprietary algorithm enables customers to personalize their cat’s food based on various factors including weight, age, activity level, and medical conditions. KatKin quickly gained a following and has continued to grow. In December of 2021, KatKin closed a $22M round in Series A funding led by Verlinvest and Perwyn.

Let’s delve into the details of KatKin and explore the recent customer concerns surrounding the changes to its products and customer experience.

Sourcing and Manufacturing

KatKin uses exclusively human-quality meats, and their recipes are gently cooked to eliminate the threat of food-borne pathogens without destroying the nutritional integrity of the food. All of KatKin’s foods are made in company-owned kitchens and tested for food safety before being shipped out to customers. Customers can look up food safety test results by batch number in the customer portal.

The original recipes are steam-cooked in individual plastic pouches and frozen to retain freshness. In March 2023, KatKin introduced a new tray packaging format, which uses a different cooking process. Instead of being cooked in the package, they are steam-cooked in small batches before being transferred to the trays.

In the FAQ section of their website, KatKin comments that the introduction of the trays was motivated by repeated customer requests for more sustainable packaging.

KatKin also notes that the new cooking method used for the food in trays improves fat incorporation in the beef, lamb, and pork recipes.

Ordering and Account Management

KatKin questionnaire

KatKin prompts you to answer several questions about your cat so they can customize the subscription appropriately.

Like many cat food subscription services, the process of ordering KatKin foods starts with a questionnaire about your cat. You’ll be asked to provide details about their current diet, food allergies, and health.

After inputting information, KatKin will provide recipe recommendations. Its portions are personalized according to your cat’s weight, activity level, and body condition. You can customize as needed.

Storage

KatKin meals stay fresh in the fridge for seven days unopened and three days open, although they will keep for six months in the freezer. KatKin recommends leaving five trays in the fridge and freezing the rest—just remember you’ll need to defrost new trays overnight when you want them for the next day.

The trays are conveniently small and stacked neatly in the freeze. There have been some issues with the new packaging—some customers received packages that were torn open or only partially frozen. KatKin has been working to correct these issues. While there were no visible leaks in the trays during testing, the fish flavor left a strong smell on our hands, which was probably due to a small leak that we didn’t catch.

Recall History

KatKin has never been recalled.

What Kinds of Cat Food Does KatKin Offer?

katkin food packages

Our tester ordered a selection of KatKin recipes—the box included the Mooo, Baaa, Oink, Gobble, and Splash recipes. Kate Barrington / Cats.com

As of June 2023, KatKin offers seven fresh cat food recipes:

  • Cluck Recipe: Chicken thigh, liver, and heart
  • Mooo Recipe: Beef trim, heart, and liver
  • Gobble Recipe: Turkey thigh, liver, and gizzards
  • Splash Recipe: Salmon, whitefish, and liver
  • Quack Recipe: Duck meat, gizzards, and liver
  • Baaa Recipe: Lamb trim, heart, and liver
  • Oink Recipe: Pork shoulder, trim, and liver

Each recipe is made with 100% human-quality meat and supplemented with KatKin Nutrient Mix. The fresh foods are shipped frozen in insulated boxes and must be refrigerated or frozen at home.

KatKin’s original line of products was packaged in individual pouches and steam-cooked prior to being frozen. Since early 2023, KatKin has transitioned into a new cooking method and recyclable tray-style packaging so the product can be offered to cats directly. In response to some consumer complaints about the change from pouches to trays, KatKin also announced the re-release of three pouch-style recipes: Cluck, Gobble, and Mooo.

The food in the trays has a finer texture than the food in the pouches, which is chunkier and meatier. This is due to the slightly different cooking process that is required to get the meals into the tray packaging.

We also discovered some pieces of gristle in the trays. While Katkin acknowledges that gristle is perfectly safe for cats, older cats and a cat with only a few teeth might find it challenging to eat.

What Did Our Test Cats Think?

cat eating katkin food

Sorrella, a 20-year-old with multiple health issues, loved her KatKin meals, and they helped to reduce her litter box odor as well. Kate Barrington / Cats.com

Our test cats had a mix of options, including Mooo, Baaa, Splash, Oink, and Gobble.

Sorrella, a 20-year-old cat with multiple health conditions, including IBD, really enjoyed KatKin. The litter box began to smell better after a couple of days of eating. However, because constipation can be an issue with older cats, KatKin may not agree with Sorrella long-term due to its lack of fiber.

Dolly Anastasia, a 15-year-old tester who also has IBD, was initially very skeptical of the KatKin and only ever grazed at the food throughout the day. After a few days, she refused the KatKin altogether, with none of the recommended tips or tricks from KatKin making any difference. It’s possible the texture of the pate wasn’t to her liking. The pouch options could be an alternative for cats that prefer a chunkier texture.

It’s fair to say that our test cats had mixed opinions of KatKin.

What Do Customers Think of KatKin Cat Food?

Overall, customers have a positive impression of KatKin. The brand has over 4,800 reviews on Trustpilot.com, about 85% of which are 5-star reviews. Positive reviews tend to mention the quality of the food and strong customer service.

About 10% of the brand’s ratings give it 1 star. Negative reviews, most of which were made by existing customers between April and June of 2023, frequently mention changes connected to the new tray packaging.

According to a KatKin survey described in an April 26th update from the company, 79% of cats accepted the food in the new packaging, and 64% of customers preferred the packaging. This meant that roughly one in every five customers was disappointed and struggled to get their cats to eat the new food.

Unhappy customers note changes in the appearance, odor, and consistency of the food as well as issues with trays arriving improperly sealed. Many customers said their cats refused the food from the trays, and others said their cats vomited or had diarrhea after eating the new product. Dissatisfied customers also describe service issues during the changeover.

In response to the concerns of unhappy customers, KatKin has since reintroduced pouch-style packaging for three recipes, allowing customers to choose between the packaging and cooking style their cat prefers.

In an update from the company, they say that “We will continue with both styles of recipes for a minimum of 6 months, before we determine if we should continue with the new trays or go back to the pouch-style recipes. We will be gathering feedback from you throughout this time to ensure we make the right decision for our cat parents.”

Note that pouch-style packaging will not show up in your trial order. Instead, it’s only available once you’ve set up a subscription.

Positive KatKin reviews:

“My cat is happy with both styles. It has been seriously wonderful to have one meal in one pouch/tray – leftover cat food hanging around in the fridge is not the best for me. One meal per pouch is a huge win for us! Sorry to hear about sad pets with the new style.” – Louise Thompson on April 21st, 2023

“I think everyone at KatKin deserves a round of applause. They may have made a mistake, but they are openly taking accountability for it. They are obviously very upset by what happened due to the changes made to the kitchen, but in reading their apology you can feel how personally they have taken this. You wouldn’t get such a genuine, heartfelt apology from a huge multi national company, and the team at KatKin have truly impressed me on how they have handled this issue. Well done to you all – I’ll definitely be a customer of yours for as long as I have cats.” – Alison Morgan, April 21st, 2023

Negative KatKin reviews:

“Changed packaging and product without warning. Many of the new packs were not fully sealed and the cat food smelt and looked bad. Cats would no longer eat the food, so contacted KatKin for support. Nothing was offered, in fact, they never responded to any of my messages via email or Facebook, even when they were responding to other positive comments. Stuck with a freezer full of cat food that will ultimately have to be binned, wasting £124 of food. Incredibly disappointed!” – Lian, May 18th, 2023

“Katkin have changed their production methods and packaging and as a result the cat food recipes are now very poor quality.Cat will no longer eat it. Runny slop or full of gristle and bone fragments. Poor quality new tray packaging- the majority of my last delivery the food trays were not sealed properly!! Trays were split or oncomplete seals. Food had to be binned. I have serious concerns regarding their quality control and production methods. AVOID.” – Suzanne Winch, June 2nd, 2023

Formulated with chicken muscle meat, liver, and heart, this single-protein formula contains nearly 64% protein measured as dry matter. As a single-protein formula, it may be a good choice for cats with sensitive digestion or food allergies.

Like all of KatKin’s formulas, this fresh food is rich in hydrating moisture. Given the limited list of animal-sourced ingredients, this food is also highly digestible and species-appropriate for cats.

It’s served in two-packs of recyclable plastic trays, each customized to your cat’s calorie needs. Though served in trays by default and in the trial, Cluck is also available in pouches for customers who have opened a subscription.

Ingredients

This recipe features fresh lamb meat as well as lamb heart and liver. Unlike the previous formula, it isn’t a single-protein recipe. Because it contains beef as well as lamb, it may not be appropriate for cats with food allergies.

In addition to lamb and beef, this recipe is supplemented with fish oil as a species-appropriate source of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3s help support your cat’s skin and coat health.

Like the previous recipe, Baaa Lamb Recipe is moisture-rich and easily digestible. It contains about 46% protein on a dry matter basis and the carbohydrate content is very low – under 5% measured as dry matter.

We also discovered some pieces of gristle in this recipe. While Katkin acknowledges that gristle is perfectly safe for cats, older cats and a cat with only a few teeth might find it challenging to eat. We ended up removing some of the gristle, as we didn’t think our older test cats would be able to chew it successfully.

Featuring duck muscle meat, gizzards, and liver, this fresh cat food formula is rich in protein and animal-sourced fats. It contains supplemental protein and fat from chicken heart and chicken thigh, as well as omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil.

Though this recipe is easily digestible for most cats, it may not be appropriate for cats with chicken allergies.

Overall, this is a fairly high-protein, high-fat fresh food that provides plenty of hydrating moisture for your cat. It’s higher in carbohydrates than the previous formulas but doesn’t contain any added plant ingredients

How Much Does KatKin Cat Food Cost?

As a fresh cat food subscription service, you can expect KatKin to cost more than the average kibble. Your daily cost will vary depending on your cat’s body weight and condition.

The minimum initial order is 14 trays, which provides two weeks of food. For a 5kg inactive skinny 15-year-old female cat, KatKin calculated that our cat would need 250 calories a day, and the total cost was £23.80. However, this included the introductory 20% discount.

Overall, Is KatKin Cat Food a Good Choice?

For the first few years, KatKin had an overwhelmingly positive reputation and a loyal following among UK cat owners. But recent concerns with product quality and customer experience are hard to ignore, and we’re still waiting to see how the company addresses all of them.

For now, the brand has taken ownership of what happened and begun to implement customer feedback, so we’re hopeful about its ability to continue delivering high-quality food that customers and cats love.

Again, KatKin’s nutritional philosophy is sound, built on a foundation of carnivore-appropriate fresh food formulas. We appreciate that they offer a selection of single-protein recipes as well as multi-protein formulas to appeal to a variety of cats. KatKin makes it easy to customize your cat’s meal plan and provides recommendations for managing common concerns like sensitive digestion and itchy skin.

Where Is KatKin Cat Food Sold?

Like many cat food subscription plans, KatKin is only sold online through the company’s website. Being based in the UK, KatKin only delivers to England, Scotland, and Wales, excluding the Scottish Highlands and Islands. You can start your subscription easily by clicking the “Start My Trial” button on the website.

Helpful review covering many questions I’d have. However the link you provide to Trustpilot keeps failing for some reason and I tried to put the company name in the search box and this also takes me to a ‘We have a problem page’ Thanks for your research on this company which offers food for our cats.

Thanks for coming back with an update. This is very odd. I’ll ask for a third opinion, but I’m afraid we can’t do much if the link seems to be working on my end. Sorry about that!

Some of their recipes (Splash! and Bubble & Quack!) actually contain sunflower oil instead of fish oil Also, if there’s no recall history, why do you rate them 7?

Hi Rachel, thanks for the comment! We’ll get this article updated to make sure all of the information is accurate. I’m considering changing our rating system to make it a bit easier to understand—since comments like yours are common—but we currently take the length of time a company has been in business into consideration when creating these ratings. So a newer company like KatKin will get a few points knocked off simply because it hasn’t had time to prove its strengths. Hope that answers your question!

This Katkin “food” resulted in my 13 year old cat ending up in Vet hospital for 3 days with gastrointestinal issues.
The vet says he was poisoned and nearly died.
I had been convinced by the marketing to give this muck a try as my little boy is 13 and a bit over weight.
4 flavours gave him a runny bottom and the Gobble flavour nearly killed him.
The vet says the food was badly contaminated with bacteria due to not being cooked sufficiently, then being frozen and defrosted.
I followed the directions carefully, and only took out 2 pouches to defrost in the fridge at a time.
I have several weeks supply that is going in the bin.
It cannot be risked giving this to any other animal for fear of similar health problems.
So… Don’t believe all the hype. This is 2 times the price of a regular grain free wet food, and 100 times more likely to cause health problems for your cats.

Dee, I had several spoiled pouches, especially the chicken (Cluck) and contacted them, they wanted me to order again. I decided to cancel all orders and avoid them, they do not care. The parcel was also delayed several times…

          Hi Gabs
I had katkin that was off once I defrosted it! I have emailed them & they want photos!! Why would I take pictures of gone off food? As you say ,they do not seem to care! They are making it sound like I am the only person who has had this food & it was bad!! I emailed them when they changed from the pouches to the trays and again I felt they were saying I was the only one to complain! Then they sent out emails saying many did not like the new trays! They seem to just want to make excuses for the product when it is bad ..They also changed the consistency from what was good to Slop !! I do find the company want us the buyers to PROVE their product is not as good as they want to think when we have a complaint! Which I find Very wrong .. What happened to the customer is always right?? I am getting tired of trying to prove I am NOT lying to this company!

Hi, I’ve just recmy first lot of katkins for 2 cats. They were already defrosted by the time I received them. Can I refreeze them now? Otherwise I’m going to have to bin them, as they only say 7 days once in the fridge. Thank you

Hey Lisa, sorry about the late reply! Yes, it’s okay to refreeze after the food has thawed, though I would want to make sure that the food was at least quite cold when it arrived; you don’t want to feed your cat spoiled food. I would check with KatKin as well to be 100% sure.

Hi, My cat Felix has been eating Katkin now for a week, I decided to try this food as was totally fed up with throwing more food away than he was eating, he just licked the gravy off.
Katkn arrived and he just couldn’t wait to eat it, I followed the instructions by warming it in the microwave for 15 seconds, to be honest it smells really nice, I sprinkled on the sprinkles, just because it was there, but didn’t really need it.
It is such a pleasure to see a completely clean dish now, yes it seems a little more expensive but this has no comparison to the amount I was throwing away.
    I would highly recommend Katkin

My daughter bought this and her healthy cat passed away very suddenly and she gave me a pouch to try with our cat and it had to be put to sleep 4 days later , both cats having exact same symptoms, just seems like too much of a coincidence for me .

That’s extremely concerning, Margaret. I would save a sample of the food and send it to a lab if you can—at the very least, please mention what happened to your veterinarian and post about this on the company’s pages as well as this review. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, and I’m sorry about your loss.

Not hearing from “Margaret” is pretty sus. Anyone can make false claims. I’m sure this would be in the news, as I didn’t see anything come up when I searched for it.

  7. Gabs

I am having massive issues with them lately, there seem to be spoiled batches especially with the chicken, apparently they expect you to freeze it all, the reason why I picked it for my cat was that it needs to be refrigerated, not frozen. The chicken pouches literally turned black, the company is not interested, since they are the most expensive company out there.

I am not ordering again, for what they charge, my cat can get fresh meat from the butcher, the company doesn’t really care, the pouches were seriously disgusting but apparently still OK to eat for several month according to the best before date.

Hi. The website clearly states that you keep the pouches in the freezer for up to 6 months. You lift a few out at a time to thaw in the fridge. Once thawed they will keep for several days in the fridge. If you do this then the food remains nice and fresh.

      Reply
    3. Andreja

It always needed to be frozen, it can be in the refrigerator for max 5 days. In the past it was great, but now they changed recipes and packaging and lots of food is actually spoiled (smelling of rotten eggs). After 3 years I unsubscribed and am now feeding my cats raw (Purrform).

I have 5 cats and only two of my cats took to this food. My cat with a sensitive tum who I really hoped would take to it as he vomits often after eating, would not even touch it. My two that do like it are 13 and 17, the 13 year old with IBS was very thin and he started putting weight on which was great but then his IBS symptoms of runny bottom and gassy tum, started to go much worse. I took him to the vet and the vet said that the food is clearly too rich for him and to take it out of his diet. It’s a shame because he does love it and it’s the only food that he clears the bowl with. My other cat who enjoys it and was looking very healthy on it too is still eating it, but with it being so expensive it’s hard to purchase for just one cat, the deliveries fill my small freezer and it would be better if they allowed you to place smaller orders. I have started to buy their treats on Amazon because you can’t buy them separately on the Katkin website which is a shame, you have to place a full order to get them. I really hope that Katkin can somehow develop an extra-sensitive range for cats with IBS and severe sensitive tummy.

Katkins does not deserve this positive review. My elderly cat suffered two bouts of severe constipation in the few weeks he was on Katkins. He stopped eating and drinking both times & was dangerously dehydrated. He had to have enemas, subcutaneous fluids and medications – £500 in vets bills. Katkins do not make it clear that their food has less fibre than other brands. Their response to me was that their veterinary nutritionist is ‘one of the world’s leading experts in the field’. Their meals, in line with a cat’s ancestal diet, contain everything a cat needs. and my cat may have other issues causing him to need more fibre. My cat suffered constipation only when he was on Katkins. Cats in the wild do not eat tendemly steamed prime cuts of meat – they eat the whole animal, including bones and fur, so get plenty of roughage. Something their world leading expert vet nutritionalist may have overlooked.
Avoid this patronising and negligent supplier. There are other quality brands that won’t damage your cat’s health.

Folks, if you care about your cat, don’t order from katkin… Many people, including myself, had really good reviews regarding Katkin,.. I signed up for it 3 months ago & the first two months were great, cat easily transitioned from dry to Katkin, he seemed alot more content, his throwing up eased & was now just bringing up furballs,… Third delivery arrived, packaging changed, instead of pouches, now trays… they claim it’s now recyclable, which was OK but it’s the food inside had also changed. It’s now a grey/brown mush, like pate, instead of the chunkier, reddish meat it used to be. They claimed they now cook it differently, more batch & blitz, to get it in the trays, instead of using pouches. My cat refused to eat it & I left it there for 24hrs or more but no, he wouldn’t touch it…and so have had to reluctantly revert back to his dry food, I’m not the only one with this issue, look on trust pilot, yes, many early reviews regarding Katkin were great, but lately, in the last couple of months, the amount of reviews are all negative because of this terrible change, they state their cats are refusing, some have even been ill with it. I emailed Katkin, stating my issues about the so called new food, asking them to contact me, to see if they could replace the full freezer worth of food (£56) with the original pouched food, as that was the far better quality I was paying for….they emailed back cancelling my subscription, no refund, no replacement, just cancelled. They have also taken down their phone lines, because of the amount of people trying to contact them about this…
So don’t order from this company, it seems they created something good, only to pull us in & now they’re totally changing their concept for a far less quality product, which ultimately our pets are refusing to eat.

Per previous review, my cat won’t eat this food now having been very happy with the old recipes. Tried for a fortnight, she just doesn’t like it. Communication from the company has been misleading – ‘just a packaging change’ rather than acknowledging the food recipe change. Treatment of customer with issues has been poor, basically the company seems in complete denial that cats are sensitive to the texture change and blame the owner for their cat not eating the new food. Katkin no longer have cats backs.

Katkin have changed packaging from pouches to trays. They assure recipe is same but the texture is definitely not. My cat has eaten katkin happily for 11 months but since the change in texture he won’t touch it. Problems with recipe availability, shortages in delivery and katkin turned off their phone lines only dealing in email. Asked for refund they initially refused until I was in contact with citizens advice bureau then refunded me in full needless to say subscription now cancelled

Been on KatKin for 8 months now, loved it, cats loved it, BUT now everything has changed – my last 3 orders (2 a month) iv had unsealed new packaging, the food inside looks and smells disgusting, my cats will NOT eat it, iv even tried feeding it them off my hand which they will take, last week I had 2 cats sick and as I had food they wouldn’t eat I fed it to the dog who is greedy and ate it all but was then really poorly. Todays delivery has come and 50% of the order is open so it’s all gone in the bin. My cats keep doing stinky farts, their poo stinks and now yet again I have a cat I hand fed last night poorly with an upset tummy. Iv emailed KatKin a million times, even to discuss replacement food and they DO NOT get back to me, it costs me £150 a month but tonight iv put my next delivery on hold til June and tomorrow I’ll be going out to buy something else. Even if it ends up being whiskas at the moment I’m not bothered cuz this food is making my cats (sphinx) poorly. Unless they sort this out asap it’s goodbye to KatKin. I’m so angry with them.

KatKin I just want to put it out there that this company had the best cat food on the planet. They have, without warning, delivered a changed product. It smells and is a gray colour with the consistency of sludge.

Kali won’t eat it. The say follow our instructions. I have. I ask for a refund as it is not fit for purpose. They refuse. Prior to the recent release of this gunge they had virtually no 1 star reviews on trustpilot. It’s now 8% of their total. If you use Katkin and are in this position please give them a one star review.

    I’m £55 out of pocket.

    Time for a serious update.
I like many others, have abandoned Katkin, as post-business large cash injection, rather than improve an already excellent business, the polar opposite has occurred and fleecing for profit, whilst lowering quality substantially, has become the new strategy. Check recent Trustpilot reviews for confirmation. A serious business meltdown is underway…

This review is very out of date. Katkin no longer gently steam the food. One of their employees confirmed it is microwaved and boiled. They won’t confirm if the offal/liver content is under 10% (over is dangerous).

Their company is built on lies, many cats have become ill on this food, they lied and said only the packaging changed when clearly the food did too. They only care about money, new trays contain a lot of grissle and not much meat. They wouldn’t give refunds initially but did once trading standards or consumer rights act were mentioned.

Their reviews have plummeted to loads of 1 star – look at the most recent.

Look up the group ‘katkin refugee’ on face book.

Your old review of them does not reflect current reality. There have been no recalls because even though they know there are spoilt batches out there they did not contact customers or recall the food – they told us to persevere snd that our cats were just fussy or that it was a coincidence that hundreds were ill.

Like many I have a freezer full of poison katkin.

I will not trust your reviews unless you give a new review of the new trays, and you should work with someone in the UK to actually test some. Spoiler alert, the new trays are not even filled, the packets open in transit, some of them smell like rotten eggs, they look like grey mulch.

We’re very aware of the issues and are currently working on an update. I’ve sent an additional email to our team to see if we can take on a UK writer who can purchase the product and properly address these very serious problems.

One customer service employee responded to one of the customers that there is 35% of liver. Next day they sent an email telling this was a mistake, that this was their old recipe. Not true, old recipe was meaty, the one now has a texture of cooked liver.

I have left a review RE Katkin, but I have spoken directly RE their food. They told me it is Microwaved!! Well I thought Microwaved food loses its vitamin content! Also the new packaging is awful & in my last order I found the food in the new packaging was far from edible and smelt bad. By the end of the day I knew it was passed it’s best as was obviously Off!! Also the new packaging must damage the food ,as the colour of the food that is touching the base is a different colour. I have had the same in packaged meats, I find beef the worse and I cut off the corners as they change colour!

I signed up for katKin and the food is awful. Neither of my cats will touch the stuff they absolutely detested it and the food stank the house out. I now have trays of the stuff in the freezer so its been a complete waste of money. I am surprised to see the positive reviews about cats loving the food as its not been our experience at all.

Please change the potentially dangerous typo in the storage section: “although they will keep for six months in the fridge”. You presumably mean freezer not fridge. Thx!

As a fresh cat food subscription service, you can expect KatKin to cost more than the average kibble. Your daily cost will vary depending on your cat’s body weight and condition

Il never go back to Katin after their gas lighting and dangerous recipes. Would you put your child in danger with food you know that has issues.. no. I’ve gone to Bella and duke – much better quality and honesty
