Why Trust Cats.com

Before testing cat food products for review, we spend a great deal of time researching the brand. We want to get a feel for the brand’s history, manufacturing standards, and sourcing policies, as well as customer satisfaction with the company and the products themselves. To this end, we read customer testimonials on the brand’s website and any other retail sites where the products are sold (and third-party review sites, where applicable).

With a firm understanding of the brand in mind, we order several products for in-home testing with our very own cats. All products are purchased at full retail price and thoroughly evaluated without any direct influence or involvement from the brand. During the testing process, we observe practical details such as packaging and shipping speed as well as features of the products. We rely on our cats to provide their opinions on the food itself.

About My Perfect Pet

My Perfect Pet was founded in 2007 by Karen Neola. After spending 25 years as a corporate professional in science, engineering, and R&D, Neola’s life changed direction when she lost her yellow Lab, Hunter. Just a few weeks later, the largest pet food recall in history was announced.

The announcement inspired Neola to revise her plans to retire from the corporate world to focus on enjoying life with her pets and giving back to her community. Instead, she dedicated herself to researching the pet food industry and found her passion in educating pet owners about how to make more informed choices related to their pets’ diets.

Neola’s passion quickly developed into a full-scale operation, resulting in the launch of My Perfect Pet.  My Perfect Pet claims to be the first company to make “cooked frozen” pet foods commercially available. The company remains independently owned and operated, claiming integrity as its No. 1 core value.

Sourcing and Manufacturing

All My Perfect Pet foods are made with ingredients fit for human consumption and manufactured in FDA-inspected human food facilities. As such, they meet the definition of “human-grade.” All meat ingredients are baked separately at the minimum cooking temperature recommended by the FDA then combined with raw vegetables and ground into a fine texture.

Once the products are cooked and blended, the supplements are added to the fully cooled product. The food is then divided into 4-ounce portions and individually packaged before being frozen. This eliminates the need for preservatives and maintains the freshness of both the cooked and raw ingredients.

The independently owned My Perfect Pet owns and operates its own manufacturing facilities located in Sulphur Springs, Texas. The company uses U.S.-sourced ingredients with the exception of lamb from New Zealand or Australia, and coconut oil from the Philippines. My Perfect Pet aims to promote sustainability with the selection of ingredients and all packaging materials are recyclable.

Recall History

To our knowledge, My Perfect Pet has never been recalled. This is significant, given that the company was founded in the wake of the largest pet food recall in history.

What Kind of Cat Food Does My Perfect Pet Offer?

My Perfect Pet offers a limited selection of fresh pet foods for both dogs and cats. While the dog food product line includes multiple flavors and recipes for multiple life stages, My Perfect Pet’s cat food line only includes the following two recipes:

  • Toby’s Turkey Carnivore Blend for Cats & Kittens
  • Low Phosphorus Chicken Carnivore Blend for Cats

Toby’s Turkey Carnivore blend is formulated according to AAFCO nutrient profiles for cats of all life stages (including kittens). It’s the only complete and balanced cat food product My Perfect Pet currently has to offer. The second recipe is intended for supplemental feeding only, formulated with lower-than-average phosphorus levels to support kidney health.

Both of My Perfect Pet’s cat food formulas are made with human-grade ingredients and prepared in FDA-inspected human food facilities. They’re cooked at moderate temperatures to preserve the nutritional integrity of the raw ingredients then portioned into 4-ounce bars and frozen. You can only purchase the food in 3-pound boxes containing 12 individually wrapped bars of frozen cat food.

What Did Our Test Cats Think?

My Perfect Pet Toby's Turkey Low Phosphorus Chicken Fresh Frozen Wet Cat Food-8

Kirsten McCarthy / Cats.com

To test My Perfect Pet with my own cat, I ordered both recipes: Toby’s Turkey and Low Phosphorus Chicken. The food comes in packs of individually wrapped bars that must be kept frozen to stay fresh until feeding, which could be inconvenient for those with low freezer space. However, they are condensed pretty flat and not very bulky compared to some other frozen products.

Once thawed, they both have a moist and meaty texture. The high protein content with no fillers allows for a highly nutritious meal mimicking what cats would eat naturally. I could tell that my cat Oliver was happily getting a taste for his wild side while eating. He was curious to try both recipes, but preferred the chicken.

#1 My Perfect Pet Toby’s Turkey Carnivore Blend for Cats & Kittens

My Perfect Pet Toby’s Turkey Carnivore Blend for Cats & Kittens

Featuring turkey thigh as the sole source of animal protein, this fresh cat food is a great example of carnivore-appropriate nutrition. The meat is cooked at low temperature while the produce remains raw, and the finished product is packed with hydrating moisture. Plus, the food is finely ground which makes it easy to eat for kittens, adult cats, and cats with dental issues.

This recipe contains nearly 56% protein (measured as dry matter) and about 15.6% fat. It doesn’t contain any grains or starchy grain-free alternatives like peas or white potatoes. Instead, spinach, cranberries, and sweet potatoes provide easily digestible, whole-food sources of essential nutrients, balanced with a handful of supplements to make the food nutritionally complete for cats in all life stages.

Overall, this is a high-protein, moderate-fat fresh cat food that’s low in carbohydrates, high in moisture, and easy to chew and digest for cats of all ages. The 4-ounce bars thaw easily overnight in the fridge and make portioning the food quite simple.

#2 My Perfect Pet Low Phosphorus Chicken Carnivore Blend for Cats

My Perfect Pet Low Phosphorus Chicken Carnivore Blend for Cats

This low-phosphorus blend is the only other recipe My Perfect Pet currently offers for cats. It’s not nutritionally complete, so it should be fed intermittently along with a complete and balanced cat food product. The food is intended for cats with compromised kidney function for which vets recommend reduced phosphorus intake.

Aside from its limitations as a supplemental diet, this recipe offers many of the same benefits as Toby’s Turkey Carnivore Blend. It contains a single source of protein (chicken muscle meat and chicken liver) with plenty of healthy omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil. It’s rich in moisture, fairly low in carbs, and appears to be easily digestible.

Measured as dry matter, this formula contains about 44.5% protein and, with white potato on the ingredients list, it’s a little higher in carbs than the previous recipe. Overall, however, it’s a quality product and could offer a carnivore-appropriate alternative to the average prescription low-phosphorus cat food.

Ingredients

Chicken, Potato, Sweet Potato, Chicken Liver, Spinach, Cranberries, Calcium Carbonate, Iodized Salt, Fish Oil, Choline Chloride, Coconut Oil, Dried Kelp, Vitamin E Supplement, Zinc Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Manganese Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Copper Gluconate, Thiamine Mononitrate.

What Do Customers Think of My Perfect Pet Cat Food?

Outside of a few detailed reviews posted on independent pet websites, reviews for My Perfect Pet products appear to be limited to the company’s website. Even there, however, both cat food products have less than 10 reviews. My Perfect Pet also posts a limited number of testimonials on the site, but they appear to be limited to reviews written by dog owners.

My Perfect Pet does have a presence on social media—more than 30,000 followers on Facebook and more than 6,000 on Instagram—but reviews on these platforms are sparse and largely outdated. The only product reviews on My Perfect Pet’s website were posted within the last three months, so it’s possible the brand moderates reviews before posting them, possibly only allowing 4- and 5-star ratings to go through.

Positive Reviews

Satisfied customers seem pleased with the quality of the ingredients in My Perfect Pet cat food and often comment that their cats enjoy the products. Several reviews focus on features that make the brand unique: offering a completely chicken-free formula and one low in phosphorus.

“My cat Riley was diagnosed with early-stage kidney disease.  We wanted to get him on a good diet to help restore his kidneys to good functioning. Including raw low phosphorus food was a key focus. The My Perfect Pet Cat Low Phosphorus Chicken frozen bars fit the bill.  Riley likes this food, and it remains a primary part of his healthy diet.”—Jean T. reviewing My Perfect Pet Low Phosphorus Chicken Carnivore Blend on October 8, 2024

“Wow, finally a human grade food that doesn’t have chicken, peas and oats which my guy is extremely allergic too. Did I mention that he absolutely goes nuts for his food.”—Steven M. reviewing My Perfect Pet Toby’s Turkey Carnivore Blend on September 10, 2024

Negative Reviews

It was difficult to find negative reviews of My Perfect Pet products, largely because there aren’t many reviews posted online. The only recent negative review I was able to find seemed to be written by a customer who was confused either about how to serve the frozen food or how much of it their cat should be eating.

“What is my cat supposed to do? Eat the bar??”—Wendy J. reviewing My Perfect Pet Low Phosphorus Chicken Carnivore Blend on June 11, 2024

How Much Does My Perfect Pet Cat Food Cost?

My Perfect Pet Toby's Turkey Low Phosphorus Chicken Fresh Frozen Wet Cat Food-10-compressed

Kirsten McCarthy / Cats.com

My Perfect Pet fresh cat food is only sold in 3-pound boxes. Each box contains 60 individually wrapped bars of frozen food weighing 4 ounces each. When you purchase through the brand’s website, you have the option to make a one-time purchase or start a subscription. There is no discount for starting a subscription, but you’ll get free shipping. Otherwise, shipping costs around $25.

Both My Perfect Pet cat food recipes sell for $224 per box which averages out to $0.93 per ounce. This makes it a little more expensive than some of the most popular fresh cat food brands like Smalls and Just Food for Cats, and even some raw frozen cat food brands like Viva.

The estimated daily cost to feed a 10-pound cat My Perfect Pet’s only nutritionally complete cat food is about $3.50. The other product is for supplemental feeding only but costs the same price per ounce.

Where Is My Perfect Pet Cat Food Sold?

The only place to purchase My Perfect Pet cat food online is through the brand’s website. Here you can place a one-time order or start a recurring subscription. Subscriptions range from weekly deliveries to deliveries made every 20 weeks.

You may also be able to purchase My Perfect Pet cat food in-store if you live in certain states. The food is only sold in local and independent retail stores but locations are spread out across the United States. The states with the largest number of retailers are California and Texas. You can search for a location near you using the brand’s store locator.

Overall, Is My Perfect Pet Cat Food a Good Choice?

Though more expensive than many fresh cat foods on the market, My Perfect Pet appears to be worth the price. The downside is there’s only one nutritionally complete recipe available for cats, so it might not be the best choice if your cat is allergic or sensitive to turkey.

It’s also a big commitment to buy a 3-pound box for more than $200 if you’re not sure your cat will like the food. My Perfect Pet does offer a refund policy—you can return the food within five days of receiving it. However, the food must be frozen and you have to choose overnight shipping, which the company points out might exceed the cost of the food.

One benefit My Perfect Pet has over some other popular fresh food companies is that it appears to be widely available in stores across the country. If you want to see the food before you buy it (or save yourself the cost of shipping), you’re likely to find it in most major cities.
