Cat nearly died having a major miscarriage. Is there any special nutrition she needs to get back on her feet ?
Hi Robin, I'm very sorry to hear that. This might depend on how far along your cat was. If she was near term and had very high calorie needs, she may still have those higher needs for a couple of weeks. For another 2-3 weeks, it would probably be best to continue to double her calorie intake compared to a non-pregnant cat her size. For an average 10lb cat, double calorie needs would be about 450-500kilocalories per day. Kitten foods are common. There are also some prescription diets like Hill's a/d and Royal Canin Recovery which are designed to help with calorie intake and more acute support. You can also supplement with a high calorie vitamin supplement like Nutri-Cal or Tomlyn high calorie nutritional gel, or something similar. You can check packaging to see how many kcal are present in the food you have. A very early miscarriage would likely require no significant change in calorie support. Any other support would depend on the reason for miscarriage. If it was possibly poor nutrition and she was underweight, you can consider the first recommendations above to help her recover. If there's a possibility of another cause (like a bacterial, viral, or parasitic infection), nutritional support would be supplemental to primary diagnosis and treatment of the underlying cause.
