Are White Cats Deaf?

A pure white cat with blue eyes is often affected by congenital hereditary deafness that may affect one or both ears. Around 40% of white cats with one blue eye are born deaf and nearly 85% are deaf if they have two blue eyes. In cats with a single blue eye, the link between blue eye color and deafness is especially apparent since they’re usually deaf on the same side of the head.

Cats with mostly white fur carry the dominant W gene. That W gene suppresses melanocytes in the ear, which can cause hearing loss in white cats. Melanocytes are melanin-producing cells that reside in a cat’s inner ear.

Are White Cats Albino?

Albino cats are also white, but not for the same reason. They have a genetic disorder called albinism that affects their melanin production. The lack of pigmentation is the reason albino cats have colorless fur, pink skin, and pale eyes. However, this disorder is not related to the gene that produces white fur and blue eyes in some cats.

Final Thoughts

Many different breeds can produce all-white cats, but some more often than others. White cats are beloved for their distinct and delicate look but they’re just like other cats in terms of temperament and health.
