Cat testing Wonder Bound Cat Food

Offering simple recipes in a variety of flavors and textures, Wonder Bound is an affordable cat food brand sold exclusively on Amazon.com. Wonder Bound promises to deliver real meat, quality ingredients, and unconditional love, but how does it stand up to real-world testing?

In this detailed review, we’ll dig into the history of Wonder Bound to learn more about the products, how they’re made, and how much cats seem to like them.

Why Trust Cats.com

My cats and I have enjoyed 15 long years together and, over that time, we’ve sampled countless cat food recipes. Early in my tenure as a cat owner, I focused on budget-friendly brands. So, I had plenty of brand knowledge and experience to draw on in my evaluation of Wonder Bound cat food. And I had my cats’ help with the testing, of course.

Before testing Wonder Bound, however, I took the time to evaluate the brand as a whole. In my analysis, I considered metrics like recall history, sourcing and manufacturing practices, and customer satisfaction rates. Testing involved feeding the products to my cats to gauge their reaction and analyzing the product information in depth.

About Wonder Bound

Wonder Bound is an Amazon-exclusive brand marketed for family-friendly prices. It’s a private label brand made exclusively for Amazon, but there isn’t much other information available. Here’s what we know.

First off, Wonder Bound isn’t the first of Amazon’s private label pet food brands. Wag, an Amazon-exclusive line of dry dog food products, was launched in May of 2018. Amazon later expanded the product line to include wet cat food products but eventually replaced them entirely with a cat-specific brand called Kitzy. The Kitzy brand appears to have launched sometime in 2020 or 2021.

The exact launch date of Wonder Bound isn’t clear, but it doesn’t appear to be a direct replacement for Kitzy (which is still sold on Amazon). Based on the “first date available” for several Wonder Bound products on Amazon, the brand seems to have launched in May of 2022. The cat food product line is limited to wet food and includes numerous flavors and textures, each sold separately and in variety packs.

Sourcing and Manufacturing

As a private label brand, Wonder Bound cat food is distributed by Amazon but a different company is responsible for formulating and manufacturing the products. Neither the brand’s page on Amazon nor the product packaging provides any specific details about who produces the food or where it is made.

The only sourcing and manufacturing information readily available for Wonder Bound cat food comes in the form of a statement printed on the labels: “Made in the USA using globally sourced ingredients from trusted suppliers.”

Amazon describes Wonder Bound’s ingredients as “wholesome” and “high-quality” but there’s not enough information available to make an objective assessment of these claims. It’s possible the same company that makes Kitzy also makes Wonder Bound, but this doesn’t clear up questions about sourcing and manufacturing.

Recall History

Wonder Bound cat food has never been recalled. It’s worth considering, however, that the products appear to have entered the market just a few years ago in 2022.

Because there’s no specific information available about where or how Wonder Bound cat food is made, a clear recall history should only hold so much weight in an evaluation of the brand’s quality and trustworthiness.

What Kind of Cat Food Does Wonder Bound Offer?

Wonder Bound offers an assortment of dry dog food and wet cat food products. The wet cat food line includes nine different recipes featuring over half a dozen different proteins. Most of the products have a paté texture but there are a few with chunks in gravy.

Here’s a list of the cat food products Wonder Bound offers:

  • Beef Dinner Paté
  • Chicken Dinner Paté
  • Turkey & Giblet Dinner Paté
  • Cod, Sole & Shrimp Dinner Paté
  • Salmon Dinner Paté
  • Whitefish & Tuna Dinner Paté
  • Chicken Recipe in Gravy
  • Tuna Recipe in Gravy
  • Salmon Recipe in Gravy

Every Wonder Bound cat food product uses the word “dinner” or “recipe” in the name. According to FDA regulations this means that at least 25% of each product’s total weight must come from the ingredient in the product name (i.e. beef, chicken, salmon, etc.). All Wonder Bound cat foods do list a specific protein as the main ingredient (after moisture), but the ingredients lists are largely filled out with animal by-products and plant proteins.

Wonder Bound cat foods are only sold in 3-ounce cans. You can purchase single flavors in a case of 24 cans, or buy 24-can variety packs of three mixed flavors. The four variety packs are divided by texture (paté or chunks in gravy) and flavor (fish and seafood or meat and poultry).

What Did Our Test Cats Think?

To test Wonder Bound and write this review, I ordered both of the variety packs. The fish and seafood paté variety pack included three flavors: Cod, Sole & Shrimp Dinner, Salmon Dinner, and Whitefish & Tuna Dinner. The other variety pack included three chunks in gravy recipes: Chicken Recipe, Turkey Recipe, and Beef Recipe.

Unsurprisingly, my order arrived quickly in familiar Amazon packaging. I chose three flavors for in-depth review and testing then got to work. My cats seemed pretty equally interested in the three flavors but preferred the chunks in gravy texture over the patés. Beef Recipe appeared to be the favorite overall.

#1 Wonder Bound Chicken Recipe in Gravy Wet Cat Food

Wonder Bound Chicken Recipe in Gravy Wet Cat Food

Chicken muscle meat appears to be the primary ingredient in this chunks-in-gravy-style wet cat food. Turkey is a supplementary source, but most of the additional protein likely comes from the vaguely named animal liver and meat by-products. Though meat by-products aren’t considered harmful to cats, named sources of whole protein are preferable.

It’s also important to note the inclusion of plant protein concentrates like wheat gluten and soy protein concentrate. Potato starch and corn starch don’t offer much in the way of nutrition, so they’re likely included to improve the texture of the food.

Though I’d prefer to see more whole proteins and less starch, the dry matter carbohydrate content of this product is lower than expected—under 15%. It’s free from artificial flavors but does contain some added color. It’s also thickened with guar gum which may contribute to loose stools in cats with sensitive digestion.

#2 Wonder Bound Beef Recipe in Gravy Wet Cat Food

Wonder Bound Beef Recipe in Gravy Wet Cat Food

Featuring beef muscle meat as the primary ingredient (after moisture), this recipe contains about 50% dry matter protein. It’s hard to say how much of that protein comes from beef, however, considering the food also contains chicken along with several non-specific proteins and by-products. It also contains two concentrated sources of plant protein (wheat and soy).

Of the three recipes I tested in depth, this was my cats’ favorite. They particularly enjoyed licking up the gravy before eating the small chunks of food. It had a lot of moisture in it and I liked the size of the 3-ounce cans.

This chunks in gravy-style flavor appears to only be sold as part of the Beef/Chicken/Turkey & Giblet variety pack. Unlike the pate-style recipes, you can’t buy it by the case.

#3 Wonder Bound Salmon Dinner Paté Wet Cat Food

Wonder Bound Salmon Dinner Paté Wet Cat Food

As a paté-style food, this recipe contains fewer starchy additives than the previous two formulas. It has a smooth, moist texture that my cats seemed to like. What I liked most about this recipe was the slightly shorter list of ingredients and lower carbohydrate content.

Wonder Bound’s paté-style recipes list an animal protein as the first ingredient (the others list moisture first). Like the gravy-style formulas, however, the patés still contain vaguely named animal liver, meat by-products, and added color. If you’re simply looking for an affordable wet food rich in protein with minimal additives, however, this could be a good choice.

What Do Customers Think of Wonder Bound Cat Food?

Because Wonder Bound is an Amazon-Exclusive brand, Amazon is the only place to find any significant number of customer reviews. Overall, the products seem to be fairly well-liked—all the products have an average rating of 3.9 out of 5 stars. That said, there seem to only be two product pages, one for patés and one for gravy-style products.

Positive Reviews

Satisfied customers frequently comment on the quality and affordability of Wonder Bound cat food. Many positive reviews mention the benefits of high moisture and protein levels as well.

“Amazingly, this food is one of the best on the market. Very high nutritionally and few “bad” ingredients. Great price. Smells like the food it is. Cats love the taste and size is perfect for a meal.” – LynnTP reviewing Wonder Bound Gravy Variety Pack on Amazon.com, October 4, 2024

“Our cat really enjoys this pate food. She generally cleans her bowl to the last lick. No offensive smell like some foods and no health issues have occurred since switching to this product. Price point is great compared to several “better” brands.” – Sue reviewing Wonder Bound Pate Variety Pack on Amazon.com, November 11, 2024

Negative Reviews

Customers who are dissatisfied with Wonder Bound cat food often complain about the ingredients, the smell, or that their cats just don’t like it. Complaints about odor seem to be more frequent with the fish and seafood recipes. Numerous negative reviews also mention the ambiguous proteins like fish (versus salmon or cod) and meat by-products (versus whole proteins).

“My cats are usually not that fussy, especially not all three of them for one thing. But none of them liked this cat food. It had a weird smell. Won’t be buying it ever again.” – Donna Presley reviewing Wonder Bound Seafood Variety Pack on Amazon.com, October 13, 2024

“Smells extremely like Tuna, even though tuna is not on the list. Could it be the anonymous “Fish”? No way to tell. I try to avoid large predator fish such as tuna because mercury is cumulative. I usually stick to small feeder fish like sardine and mackerel.” – Gerry Barker reviewing Wonder Bound Cod, Sole & Shrimp wet food on Amazon.com, November 13, 2024.

How Much Does Wonder Bound Cat Food Cost?

The marketing for Wonder Bound cat food focuses on family-friendly pricing, and this claim appears to be valid. Averaging $0.22 per ounce, Wonder Bound cat food is similarly priced to other bargain brands like Friskies, Fancy Feast, and Amazon’s own Kitzy.

Wonder Bound cat food is only sold in 24-packs of 3-ounce cans. The price doesn’t change whether you buy a single flavor or a variety pack, but you could see some savings if you start a subscription. The estimated daily cost to feed a 10-pound cat Wonder Bound cat food is

Where Is Wonder Bound Cat Food Sold?

As an Amazon private label brand, you can only purchase Wonder Bound cat food on Amazon.com. If you want to view the entire collection of cat food products, visit the Wonder Bound page on Amazon.com.

Overall, Is Wonder Bound Cat Food a Good Choice?

The main thing Wonder Bound has going for it as a brand is its affordability. The products, however, exhibit some of the same downsides as recipes from similarly-priced brands. If you want to avoid animal by-products or added color, you’ll need to keep shopping. It’s also worth noting that all Wonder Bound cat foods contain multiple protein sources, so they may not be appropriate for cats with food allergies to common proteins.

Another potential benefit Wonder Bound has to offer is the relatively low carbohydrate content of the products. The gravy-style foods are generally under 15% and the patés under 10% carbs, measured as dry matter. Cats who don’t like pate may also appreciate the chunks in gravy formulas from Wonder Bound.
