Why Trust Cats.com

Along with other members of the Cats.com team, I’ve personally purchased, tested and reviewed over two dozen of the most popular cat litter brands and more than 50 individual litter products. The products were purchased at full retail price and the entire testing process was funded by Cats.com without direct input or influence from the companies involved.

When testing cat litter products, I use them in my own home for at least ten days. I make observations about the litter’s appearance, granule size, scent and dust level when pouring it into the litter box. I also test the litter for odour control, ease of scooping, and tracking. My two cats, Wessie and Forest, make their opinions known when they show preference for one product over another.

Based on extensive research, hands-on testing, and expert insights, I’ve selected the following 8 cat litter products as the best you can put in your cat’s box.

The Best Rated Cat Litter: Our Top 8 Recommendations

Accounting for what I believe to be the most important features of a cat litter, absorption, odour control, paw-feel and scoopability, my (and my cats’) go-to pick is BreederCelect Recycled Paper Cat Litter. However, this option might not tick all of your boxes.

Every cat and every cat owner is different, and I’ve found it usually takes a little trial and error to find the perfect product to suit both of your needs. To help you optimise your testing, I’ve put together a list of the UK’s top 8 cat litters, each of which have key features designed to address common needs and preferences, covering a wide range of cat litter types made from different materials and at varying price points.

Ready to dive in? Here are our recommendations for the UK’s top 8 cat litters in 2025.

#1 Overall Best: BreederCelect Recycled Paper Cat Litter

BreederCelect Recycled Paper Cat Litter

  • Brand: BreederCelect
  • Material: Paper
  • Clumping: No
  • Flushable: No
  • Features: 99% recycled paper, no chemical additives, soft underpaw
  • Price: £0.48 per litre

I found this to be a great all round cat litter. It’s not too hard, not too soft and I didn’t have any issues with dust flying around when pouring it out or scooping it up after use. I really like the fact that it’s made from 99% recycled paper, with no chemical additives or artificial scents, and found it to be really good at absorbing liquids and neutralising nasty smells.

I also didn’t have any issues with the litter sticking to my cat’s paws or the bottom of our litter box which made cleaning everything out a breeze! If you prefer clumping or flushable litter there are more fitting options below, but aside from that BreederCelect is an excellent pick.

What We Liked:

  • Made from sustainable materials.
  • No artificial scents or chemicals.
  • Relatively mess free.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Can’t be flushed.
  • A little expensive at full price.

#2 Most Absorbant: Amazon Lifelong Bentonite Premium Cat Litter

Amazon Lifelong Bentonite Premium Cat Litter

  • Brand: Lifelong
  • Material: Clay
  • Clumping: Yes
  • Flushable: No
  • Features: Highly absorbent, baby powder scent, high binding capacity
  • Price: £1.40 per litre

If you often find excess moisture sitting at the bottom of your litter box, this litter is for you. I found this product to be one of the most absorbent litters I’ve ever tested, and certainly the best at soaking up moisture of all the picks we’re covering today.

The highly absorbent nature of this litter makes removing clumps very easy, but finding them is another thing. I found the litter barely changed colour after my cats did their business, so if you don’t clean it immediately, you’ll be going on a little treasure hunt! I also couldn’t really smell the “baby powder” scent, but it still did a good job of containing odours all the same.

What We Liked:

  • Very good at absorbing moisture.
  • Forms solid and easy to remove clumps.
  • Fairly good odour control.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Hard to spot soiled litter.
  • The added scent isn’t very strong.

#3 Premium Pick: World’s Best Cat Litter

World's Best Cat Litter 28lb

  • Brand: World’s Best Cat Litter
  • Material: Corn
  • Clumping: Yes
  • Flushable: Yes
  • Features: Highly absorbent, compostable, low tracking
  • Price: £1.42 per pound

World’s Best Cat Litter might be one of the most expensive options we’ve tried, but I’m hard pressed to say it’s not worth the money. I found it to be super absorbent, really effective at masking odours (even if its own smell is pretty strong!) and very easy to clean up as it’s both clumping and flushable.

I didn’t have any issues with dust or the litter getting stuck to my cats’ paws and tracked around my house, and I think it’s really handy that soiled litter can be safely composted. The only real downsides are the cost and potential issues with cats who haven’t used corn litter before not taking to it naturally, though I found after a little sniffing my two were just fine.

What We Liked:

  • Can be safely flushed or composted.
  • Pretty good at absorbing moisture.
  • No issues with dust or tracking.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Very expensive at full price.
  • Quite a strong natural scent.

#4 Top Eco-Friendly Pick: Bio-Catolet Hygienic Recycled Litter

Bio-Catolet Light & Hygienic Recycled Paper Granules Cat LitterBio-Catolet Light & Hygienic Recycled Paper Granules Cat Litter

  • Brand: Bio-Catolet
  • Material: Paper
  • Clumping: No
  • Flushable: No
  • Features: Biodegradable, dust free, compostable
  • Price: £0.56 per litre

Not only is the litter itself made from 100% recycled paper, the bag is made from almost entirely recycled materials (100% outer, 85% lining), non-toxic adhesives and printed with water-based ink, making for just about the most eco-friendly cat litter on the market.

Thankfully, it’s also a very good product. I found the pellets to be really absorbent and free from dust so I can’t expect you’d ever have any issues with residue or tracking, and I think it does a pretty good job of containing unpleasant odours. For the price and the eco-friendly benefits, you can’t go much wrong with this pick!

What We Liked:

  • Eco-friendly, biodegradable and compostable.
  • Surprisingly lightweight and easy to carry.
  • Affordably priced.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Can’t be flushed.
  • The natural smell isn’t too pleasant.

#5 Best Pellet Style: Fresh Paws Premium Wood Pellet Cat Litter

Fresh Paws Premium Wood Pellet Cat

  • Brand: Fresh Paws
  • Material: Wood
  • Clumping: No
  • Flushable: No
  • Features: Antibacterial, natural wood scent, dust free
  • Price: £0.47 per litre

This litter does everything you’d want a pellet litter to do incredibly well, from preventing cats tracking mess through your home to masking odours under a pleasant, natural scent. I really liked the fresh pine fragrance (my cats seemed to as well) and the fact the pellets disintegrate when wet is really handy when it comes to daily cleaning.

I also think the antibacterial properties of the pellets offer great peace of mind that missed soiled spots won’t turn into hazards. The only negatives I found were that the packaging is a little flimsy and the pellets might be a bit too large for smaller cats.

What We Liked:

  • Natural pine scent.
  • Dust free and easy to clean.
  • Antibacterial properties offer peace of mind.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Packaging could be stronger.
  • Pellets could be a little big for smaller cats.

#6 Best Clumping Litter: Ever Clean Clumping Cat Litter

Ever Clean Clumping Cat Litter

  • Brand: Ever Clean
  • Material: Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)
  • Clumping: Yes
  • Flushable: No
  • Features: Extra strong clumping, lavender scent, low tracking
  • Price: £1.90 per litre

The stand out feature of this litter is its extra strong clumping capabilities which I found did a great job of containing my cats’ business in easy to spot, handle and remove clusters. The litter itself is very long lasting so I found myself using quite a bit less than I’m used to, and the subtle lavender scent is a nice addition that helps it stand out from other picks in this list.

Other things to note are that the packaging is very high quality which helps when replacing soiled litter, and I didn’t have any real issues with excess dust despite the litter itself being very fine. As far as downsides go, the major one is the price, but if you could argue that the longevity of the litter makes up for this to some extent.

What We Liked:

  • Forms easy to handle, solid clumps.
  • Pleasant, subtle lavender scent.
  • Very long lasting.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Very expensive at full price.
  • Not the most eco-friendly option.

#7 Easiest to Spot: Sanicat Classic Cat Litter With Aloe Vera

Sanicat Classic Cat Litter With Aloe Vera

  • Brand: Sanicat
  • Material: Clay
  • Clumping: Yes
  • Flushable: No
  • Features: Low dust, odour control, aloe vera scent
  • Price: £0.82 per litre

A good all round litter with a fresh aloe vera scent and great clumping capabilities. My cats really seemed to like the fragrance of this litter, which did a good job of masking urine smells, but I did find it struggled to contain poop smells which lingered far longer than I’d have liked after cleaning.

My favourite thing about this litter is that it changes colour very clearly when soiled making it super easy to remove business without emptying the whole box out. The biggest downside for me was that while the litter is super absorbent, it takes quite a long time to dry, meaning you can be left with lingering smells from time to time.

What We Liked:

  • Great clumping capabilities.
  • Pleasant alow vera fragrance.
  • Changes colour clearly when soiled.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Not great at masking poop smells.
  • Can take a long time to dry.

#8 Best Non-Clumping: Catsan Hygiene Cat Litter

Catsan Hygiene Cat Litter

  • Brand: Catsan
  • Material: Quartz, lime
  • Clumping: No
  • Flushable: No
  • Features: Anti-microbial, long lasting odour control, allergen free
  • Price: £0.65 per litre

If you’re looking for a non-clumping option, this litter is among your best options. I found it to be very absorbent and long lasting with a pleasant odour, and the “mineral shield” feature seemed to do a great job of containing foul smells when I didn’t have time to clean out the litter straight away.

This pick is great for cats who don’t like the texture of clumping litters, and owners should like it too as I had no problems removing solid waste quickly and with no mess. The one issue I did have was that this litter produced quite a bit of dust when I poured it into my litter box, so expect a fair bit of sweeping or hoovering if you do choose this option.

What We Liked:

  • Highly absorbent.
  • Very long lasting.
  • Good odour protection.

What We Didn’t Like:

  • Produces quite a lot of dust.
  • Can’t be flushed or composted.
