We cat lovers know that felines are amazing creatures. So is it any wonder that cats have made it into Guinness World Records many times?

Searching the website for cat records, more than 3,000 hits come up! Some of them, though, are human accomplishments: the record of Most People Wearing ‘Cat in the Hat’ Hats, for instance. But many records involve cats doing or simply being something amazing, noteworthy, and in many cases, bizarre and wacky.

With numerous records achieved by cats, the Guinness website put together a page just with a roundup of some cat feats. Here are 10 of our favorite cat Guinness records. (Note that any of these records might have been topped.)

1. The World’s Wealthiest Cat

In 1988, British antiques dealer Ben Rea died and left his fortune – worth $12.5 million in American dollars – to his beloved cat, Blackie. Blackie was the last of 15 cats that the reclusive Rea shared his life with in his mansion. Rea refused to recognize his estranged family in his will.

Not, of course, that Blackie can actually spend the money, being a cat. But, Rea split most of his wealth among three animal-rescue charities and instructed them to care for his Blackie.

2. The Most Likes for a Cat on Facebook

When Tabatha Bundesen of Morristown, Arizona created a meme of her cat named Tardar Sauce – who had a sourpuss look on her face due to feline dwarfism – it went viral in 2012. The unique cat became known as Grumpy Cat, a beloved feline whose crabby face and sayings brought so much joy to our lives. In May of 2017, Grumpy Cat got the Guinness record with more than 8.7 million likes on Facebook.

Tardar Sauce passed away in 2019, but her grumpy spirit lives on forever in memes, calendars, movies, and more. We love you, GC!

3. The Longest Domestic Cat

Ludo, a cat who lives in the UK, measures an astonishing 3 feet and 10.6 inches long! Not surprisingly, he is a Maine Coon, a breed of larger cats. Ludo made the Guinness World Records 2017 Edition. Kelsey Gill of Wakefield, England, got the Maine Coon after she fell in love with the big tabby cats in the Harry Potter movies.

“Ludo being so long means he’s quite clumsy and he’s not as agile as other cats, but he can’t hide. … You can always find Ludo!” Gill says in a video.

Ludo must make quite a snuggle!

4. The Longest Human Tunnel Traveled Through on a Skateboard by a Cat

Isn’t that a mouthful? Yet, it’s a real Guinness record. In February 2017 in Queensland, Australia, a Bengal cat named Boomer traveled through a human tunnel of 13 people on a skateboard, which the cat pushed himself. You can watch the funny feat here.

In June 2020, a super-smart tortoiseshell named Alexis in Austria performs 26 tricks – including a high five, waving paws, and shaking her head – in one minute! The cat’s owner, Anika Moritz, said she started training the cat just a few weeks after she got her as a kitten. You can watch Alexis in action here and read Moritz’ story about training with positive reinforcement.

Here’s one that goes way back to the World War II era in London. In 1942, a 19-year-old cat named Jim ran upstairs to awaken his humans when a house fire erupted. The Coffeys were able to escape, thanks to their smart feline. The Blue Cross charity, founded in London in 1897, gave its Blue Cross Award, which honors animal acts of bravery, to Jim. The first recipient was a dog in 1940.

7. Shortest Living Cat

The Munchkin cat is known for its short legs, but a cat named Fizz Girl from California broke a record with her mere 6 inches of height! Fizz Girl is often mistaken for a Munchkin kitten, but she is fully grown. The cat made the Guinness World Records 2012 Edition.

Fizz Girl’s human, Tiffani Kjeldergaard, describes her cat as a princess who “knows that she’s short, but she has no problems climbing and getting to the highest places in the house.”

It’s anyone’s guess how the cat and owner pulled this bizarre one off: Bibi, a white and black domestic shorthair cat in Malaysia, carried 10 stacked dice on a steady paw for at least a few seconds in 2017. Bibi’s human, Siew Lianchui, must have done some funky training to make this happen.

9. Loudest Purr by a Domestic Cat Ever

Remarkably, two cats in the UK separated by four years achieved the exact same super-loud purr of 67.8 decibels! The first was Smokey in 2011, matched in 2015 by Merlin. These cats could give motorboats a competition for the loudest motor!

10. Longest Jump by a Cat

Under the training of Melissa Arleth, an American cat named Sputnik jumped 7 feet 6 inches on the set of the show Lo Show Dei Record in Milan, Italy. That happened recently – in February 2024. That’s quite a leap!
